"Grit your teeth and go for it!" were my dad's wise words growing up. Being brave when starting new adventures has always been my approach in life. I don't take unnecessary risks -- you won't see me jump out of a plane, ever! But I will jump on opportunities like moving overseas for a couple of years or starting my own boutique counseling business. I realize that being brave and open to new possibilities has allowed me to approach life with an openness to change. I love learning and evolving in my thought process and I seek experiences that help me grow, from writing books and traveling, to painting and researching.
My name is Dr. Munira (moo-nee-ra) and I'm a college and career counselor who loves helping students apply to college and gain the self-awareness necessary to prepare for higher education and beyond. I feel honored to listen to the hopes and dreams of students, and I love that each student teaches me something about life through their lived experience.

I'm committed to creating strong relationships with students and families as I approach all students holistically, ensuring that academic and personal goals are in alignment. Through encouragement and empathy, I connect with students while helping them discover their strengths. I maintain open communication with parents and relieve anxiety and stress as the student prepares for college and beyond.
Based in Irvine, I serve high school students and community college transfer students throughout Orange County and California, as well as internationally. I'm adaptable to different learning styles and pathways to success, and I am particularly committed to access and equity for first-generation and underrepresented students.
I strongly believe that education is the door to personal growth, career fulfillment, and financial success.

Attending UCLA was pivotal to my growth as a young adult, and my love of learning led me to pursue my doctorate in education.

The short answer: earlier than you think. Most students who see the greatest benefit from private college counseling begin in 9th or 10th grade, when there is still time to make meaningful decisions about coursework, activities, and goals.
Here is a general guide by grade:
If you are a high school student in Orange County wondering whether it is too early or too late to work with a private college counselor, the answer is almost always: start now. Book a consultation with My Private College Counselor to find out where you stand and what your options are.
Many students and parents are not sure what a private college counselor actually does, especially if they already have a counselor at their high school or community college. Here is the honest answer: a private college counselor does everything your school counselor simply does not have time to do. The average high school counselor in California manages hundreds of students at once. That leaves very little time for the personalized, one-on-one attention that a competitive college application requires. A private college counselor works exclusively with a small number of students and focuses entirely on your individual goals, strengths, and circumstances.
Here is what Dr. Munira at My Private College Counselor specifically does:
Evaluates where you stand — Before recommending anything, a good counselor reviews your academic history, your GPA, your course rigor, your test scores, and your extracurricular involvement, and gives you an honest assessment of where you are and what is realistic.
Helps you figure out where you want to go, and why — Many students apply to schools because they have heard of them, not because they are actually a good fit. A private counselor helps you identify schools that match your academic profile, your career interests, and your personal preferences to build a balanced college list.
Creates a personalized action plan — Deadlines in college admissions are unforgiving. A counselor maps out every application deadline and keeps you on track so nothing falls through the cracks.
Guides your essay from start to finish — A private counselor helps you identify the right story to tell, gives detailed feedback through multiple drafts, and ensures your final essay sounds like you, not AI.
For community college transfer students specifically, a counselor helps with TAG applications, and Cal-GETC planning, Assist.org articulation agreements, and building a transfer plan that keeps you on track to transfer in two years. A private college transfer counselor helps community college students make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes throughout the transfer process.
The bottom line: a private college counselor is not a shortcut or a cheat code. They are a knowledgeable guide who helps you present the strongest, most authentic version of yourself to the colleges on your list — and helps you avoid the costly mistakes that derail even strong applicants.
Navigating the college application process can be overwhelming, below is an estimate of how much time you could spend at each stage of the process. The amount of time we work together depends on how many schools you’re applying to and how much support you need. Some students prefer more hands-on guidance, while others check in periodically for targeted feedback.
Major & Career Exploration (1-2 hours)
Strategy & College List Building (1-2 hours)
UC/Personal Statement & Supplemental Essays (6-30 hours, depending on the number of schools)
Application Review & Submission (2-4 hours)
Transferring from a California community college to a University of California (UC) campus is one of the most well-defined transfer pathways — but it requires careful planning, ideally starting before your first semester. Here are the key steps:
The most common mistakes students make are not completing the right major prep courses for their specific target campus and major, choosing the wrong GE courses, missing TAG deadlines and minimum requirements. Dr. Munira can help you avoid these pitfalls and build a transfer plan tailored to your goals.

Transferring to a private university — whether within California (such as USC, Chapman, Loyola Marymount, or Pepperdine) or out of state — is a very different process from transferring within the UC or CSU systems, and it is one that many students are less familiar with.
Here is what makes private university transfers distinct:
If you are interested in transferring to a private university from a California community college, working with Dr. Munira early is especially valuable. The process is less standardized, which means more opportunity for a well-prepared applicant — but also more room for mistakes.
